Briefing on March 2003 Open Parish Meetings

First of all many thanks to those who came along to the recent Open Meetings in the Hall; your feedback will help us to prioritise and focus on those issues that will help to develop our adopted theme: St Joseph’s - Building One Family.

For those of you that were unable to come along to the meetings we would certainly like to get your views and opinions, so please speak to one of the Development Team members or drop a note in the collection basket clearly noted ‘for the attention of the Development Team’. Or use the feedback form on this web-site.

So what happened at the Open Meetings?
Both meetings started with a prayer before each of the Development Team were introduced to the audience. There then followed a short presentation by the Team on the work already done, what is in progress and potential ideas for the future.
The audience then broke into groups to discuss the content of the Team’s presentation and more specifically issues around the Liturgy and Home Groups before coming back together to share their thoughts with the whole meeting.

Refreshments were provided before the meetings closed with a final prayer.

Issues Discussed:

Children and Youth – general consensus that this is a key area for the Team to concentrate on; a free standing display of the children’s liturgy work will be arranged in front of the Sacred Heart Altar soon. We’ve had helpful input from local professional youth leaders so that arrangements are now in hand to form a Youth Group. At all Masses over the weekend of 5/6th April questionnaires will be available for completion by all parents to help formulate potential youth activities. There will also be the chance for people to register their interest in helping to run the youth group. A meeting for all volunteers will be held in the Presbytery at 7.30pm on 28th April.

Communication – so far the Team have spoken about their role and work at all Masses, made regular contributions to the weekly bulletin, created their own notice board at the back of Church and hosted two Parish Open Meetings, as well as producing this special briefing; work is continuing on our Parish Web Site. A preview was provided at the Open Meetings and received a very favourable reception from all present; it will be interactive as a place for sharing news, ideas, prayer, practical help, moans, anything and everything. Consideration is also being given to replacing the external notice board. What else would you like to see happen?

The Liturgy – meaning ‘what goes on in services’ this is an extremely important part of our Parish life and as members of the Parish community it is something that we should take an active part in. There will be a meeting in the Presbytery on Thursday 8th May at 7.30pm for anyone wishing to help develop our Liturgy for Masses, Seasons and other services throughout the year.

Developing Home Groups – is next on the development team’s agenda. The meetings in Autumn discerned that these were important, so we are seeking views about if there is a need for these, what should their purpose be - Groups for Prayer, Bible Study or just simply getting together over a cup of tea? How should they start and be supported?
Let us know what you would like to see. Could you help in any way?

Special Masses – it is hoped to arrange a special Mass for the sick and housebound later this year.
Please let us know if you can help us to arrange this.

Social Committee – a new steering group is being formed to foster both existing and new social activities in the parish. Details will be published as they become known.
Other future Ideas – extending the welcoming ministry to all services; a possible new external notice board; an exhibition of the church banners.
