St Joseph’s Parish Liturgy Group

Minutes of the meeting on the 19th June 2007

Present: A. Cawthorn, A. Waters, P. Crean, P. Drake, C. Woods, R. Page, K. Moore, A. Zammit.

Apologies: Fr. Harry, E. Kelly, M. Johnson.

A. Cawthorn opened the meeting with the prayer to the Holy Spirit. The group then reflected on a Scripture reading chosen by R. Page.

Minutes: Minutes of the last meeting were agreed and accepted as accurate.

Matters arising: Taize Service was well received and well attended. A request was made that in future there should be more silent times. It was agreed that there was a need for an introduction - either a chant or a prayer and a word of welcome.
Special thanks to D. Long for renovating the Taize Cross so beautifully and to K. Moore for her inspirational focal point.

CAFÉ Materials: The group had intended to view one of the talks and make some decisions about how to make use of the materials. This was deferred to the next meeting when hopefully Fr. Harry will be able to join the group.

Eucharistic Services: It was decided at the Parish Council Meeting that whilst Fr. Harry is covering the Saturday evening Mass at St. Albans, the 9.00 am Saturday morning Mass be replaced by a Eucharistic Service. B. Cawthorn is to be approached to provide a rota which will be published in the Bulletin. This to be effective from Saturday 30th June
Also- on occasions when there is a funeral, the Requiem Mass will replace the 9.00 am Mass.

Mass Intentions. Many parishioners have voiced concerns about the fact that the intention of the Mass is not announced. The unanimous feeling of the meeting was that it is very desirable, often supportive and comforting to people when the intention of the Mass is announced. It prompts those present to add their prayers to the intention and also promotes the sense of community and family in the parish.
A.Cawthorn is to raise this matter with Fr. Harry.
Benediction A letter from a parishioner was presented to the meeting requesting that the parish, in line with Vatican 2 pronouncements, be urged to show their devotion to the Eucharist and attend Benediction. The letter suggested that this devotion be linked to topical issues and suffering within the world. Much discussion followed and it was generally agreed that more attention needs to be paid to encouraging Eucharistic Devotion. At present only about 5 or 6 people attend Benediction on the First Sunday of the month.
Is Sunday afternoon the best time? What else can be done?
We need to discuss this with Fr. Harry and ascertain his views.
In the meantime it was suggested that a notice could be printed in the Bulletin stating the specific prayer intention.
A.Cawthorn and A. Waters to send a reply to the letter.

This prompted a discussion about the Bidding Prayers. It was agreed that at present the Bidding Prayers at Mass do not relate to current events and should more closely reflect the needs and suffering within the world.
A request to form a team of Bidding Prayer writers to be made through the Bulletin.
Suggestion made and accepted that the children will provide and read the Bidding Prayers on the First Sunday of each Month starting on 7th October.
