Fr. Aidan's sermon - Easter Sunday 11th April 2004 |
|
Sermon given whilst accompanying children: On Palm Sunday we went on a journey within the church, we saw the suffering and death of Christ. This week we will not travel so far. We will start at the wooden cross we brought into the church on Good Friday. There is no figure of Christ on it only a cloth, which is there to remind us of the linen cloth that wrapped the body of Christ when he was taken from the cross and placed in a cave. As we move on this Easter Sunday we see that the cave is empty, as Jesus had become alive again. Mary Magdalene and the other women were the first to find the cave bare followed by Peter and John; all they saw was the clothes and realised their best friend had risen from the dead - he was still alive! Last part of the journey which is around the pulpit we see lots of signs of Easter on the banners. We are reminded that Christ has risen by the empty cross coming out of a lily. Throughout the church we celebrate with lots of lilies, yellow and gold - the sign of the risen Christ. On a further banner we see the hills and sun rising. God gave us the rising sun to remind us of how he gave us his only son who rose from the dead. Last thing we see is the blessed water. When we were baptised we rise to the new life of Christ. So Jesus isn't just about Jesus rising from the dead but that he comes to live in us. We live the risen life of Jesus. We are the light of Jesus, we are the light of the world. Now we look around the candle which is a further sign of the risen Christ, he is the light of the world. Near the candle we have chocolate the shape of an egg which represents new life - the new life of Christ. It also reminds us of the rock which was placed at the entrance of the cave. |
